🌿 Could the Somerset Levels Become a National Park?

CPRE Somerset launches a big conversation about the future of our special landscape

The Somerset Levels are one of the most distinctive and important landscapes in the county. Now, CPRE Somerset is asking a big question: could the Somerset Levels become a National Park?

CPRE Somerset has been campaigning to protect England’s countryside, nature and landscapes for 100 years, and 2026 marks its centenary.

The organisation believes the Somerset Levels could have what it takes to become a National Park. It recognises that achieving National Park status would be a complex and long term process involving many different organisations, communities and landowners.

But before any decisions are made, CPRE wants to hear from the people who know and love the Levels.

💬 Have your say

CPRE Somerset has launched a short survey asking people what makes the Somerset Levels special to them, what they love about the area and what they think could be improved.

More than 200 people have already responded, but CPRE is keen to hear from as many people as possible.

CPRE Somerset is also hosting a public event to explore the idea of National Park status and hear different perspectives on what it could mean for the Somerset Levels.

The evening will be hosted by CPRE Somerset President Mariella Frostrup, with a panel including representatives from Visit Somerset, the farming community, Somerset Wildlife Trust, the Somerset Eel Recovery Project and national CPRE.

Everyone is welcome, and attendees are encouraged to bring questions and an open mind.

The event is free, but advance booking is recommended.

🌾 What does the future hold?

CPRE Somerset says this is likely to be a long journey, with no quick decisions or easy answers.

For now, the focus is on raising awareness, listening to local people and exploring what the future could look like for this unique landscape.

You can find more information, frequently asked questions and stories from people who live in and around the Somerset Levels on CPRE Somerset’s dedicated website.
